Jobs in this family plan and conduct food service or nutritional programs to assist in the promotion of health and disease control.

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Counsel clients regarding nutritional choices.
  • Coordinate nutrition program services with other nutrition or public health programs.
  • Confer with public health personnel on food and nutrition related to health programs or problems.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from creating meal plans and overseeing food preparation to planning/implementing comprehensive nutrition programs and services.

Jobs and Descriptions

Nutritionist

Professional-level Nutritionist accountable for professional work in the provision of nutrition services. Acts with independence in being accountable for the collection and assessment of anthropometric data. Accountable for the creation of individual meal plans and oversight of food preparation. Counsels clients on how to lead healthier lifestyles and prevent or manage health issues related to nutrition. Participates in nutritional health improvement clinics. Participates in the administration of nutrition programs.

Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant discipline and 0-3 years of experience as a Nutritionist.

Nutritionist Team Lead

Supervisory-level Nutritionist accountable for professional level work in planning, adaptation, and implementation of the nutritional components of general or specialized public health programs; evaluating nutrition program services; or resource development and training in a district health office, or in a specialized public health program. Accountable for the creation of individual meal plans and oversight of food preparation. Counsels clients on how to lead healthier lifestyles and prevent or manage health issues related to nutrition. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant discipline and 3-5 years of experience as a Nutritionist.

Nutritionist Supervisor

Supervisory/Managerial Nutritionist accountable for professional level work in planning, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive nutrition programs and services. Plans, implements, and evaluates comprehensive statewide nutrition programs; or assumes responsibility in central office for the nutrition services of a specialized statewide public health program. May be accountable for managing a program or grant project (program or grant dollars, nutrition equipment, training, materials, and supplies); monitoring for contract compliance with federal and state regulations, reporting findings, providing follow-up evaluation, and making recommendations or corrections.

Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant discipline and 4-6 years of experience as a Nutritionist.
