Jobs in this family oversee, coordinate, and maintain the basic cleanliness and appearance of State operated buildings.

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Clean office/resident areas. 
  • Operate power cleaning equipment.           
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Perform routine maintenance.         

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from basic custodial duties to the supervision/management of custodial staff.

Jobs and Descriptions

Custodian

Vocational-level Custodian accountable for cleaning office areas or resident areas. Works under general direction and follows set instructions and directions. Works as part of a cleaning crew. Operates a variety of power cleaning equipment. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of supplies and tools and notifying supervisor of resupply needs. May perform routine maintenance on cleaning equipment.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 0-1 year of work experience.

Custodian Team Lead

Custodian accountable for cleaning state offices or facilities. Works as part of a cleaning crew and may function as the lead worker. Trains and instructs custodians in cleaning methods. Operates a variety of power cleaning equipment. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of supplies and tools and notifying supervisor of resupply needs. Performs maintenance on cleaning equipment.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 1-2 years of work experience.

Custodian Supervisor

Custodial work supervisor accountable for overseeing the work of a moderate size cleaning team. Works independently in planning and assigning cleaning and maintenance work, anticipates staffing and cleaning needs. Inspects building areas to ensure work has been done properly. Trains and instructs custodians in cleaning methods. Maintains an inventory of supplies and tools and is responsible for ordering resupply needs.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 3-4 years of work experience.
