Heavy Equipment Operator I

First-level vocational position accountable for operating one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties. Employees perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance duties required on a district wide or statewide crew and may assist in and require training in complex operation on medium or heavy-duty equipment. May drive commercial vehicles on public roadways.

Typically requires 0-1 year of experience. Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6-12 months of employment.

Heavy Equipment Operator II

Journey-level vocational position accountable for operating one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties. Employees may operate more complex equipment with supervised training and perform a variety of skilled maintenance duties. May drive commercial vehicles on public roadways.

Typically requires 1-3 years of experience and a Commercial Driver’s License.

Heavy Equipment Operator III

Seasoned vocational position accountable for operating one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties. Employees operate the most complex equipment and may mentor or supervise lower level operators. May drive commercial vehicles on public roadways.

Typically requires 2-4 years of experience and a Commercial Driver’s License.

Heavy Equipment Team Lead

Supervisory position accountable for managing a team of Heavy Equipment Operators. Jobs at this level may be more complex or have oversight of a small or mid-sized state facility or an area or department within a larger state facility. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. May drive commercial vehicles on public roadways.

Typically requires 3-5 years of experience and a Commercial Driver’s License.
