Vocational Benefits position accountable for assisting members and agency personnel in completing and filing claims for service, disability, and survivor benefits. Provides basic information regarding specific statutory provisions, rules, and regulations governing benefits available to members and beneficiaries under various retirement plans and payment options.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 2-4 years of experience.

Retirement Specialist I

First-level professional Benefits position accountable with providing assistance and information to individual members, groups, and staff in other departments within the agency and with member-agencies. Knowledge of the statutory and regulatory requirements of each system or plan administered by the retirement system is required.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience.

Retirement Specialist II

Second-level professional Benefits position accountable for researching, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting important detailed, often complex employment and wage and contribution records for determination of service credit eligibility and calculation of benefit amounts. Assistance and information is provided to individual members, groups, staff in other departments within the agency, and to the system's member agencies. A broad and thorough knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements of each system or plan administered by the retirement system is required.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of experience.

Retirement Specialist III

Third-level seasoned Benefits position accountable for professional and technical work involving the responsibility of ensuring thorough and accurate closure of an active member account to retirement status. Using actuarial tables and prescribed mathematical calculations, the incumbent determines the value of each retiree's account in payable benefits. Assistance and information is provided to individual members, groups, staff in other departments within the agency, and to the system's member agencies. A broad and thorough knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements of each system or plan administered by the retirement system is required. Jobs at this level may serve as a lead worker and provide training and direction to lower-level positions.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of experience.

Retirement Team Lead

Supervisory position accountable for professional and technical work involving the responsibility of ensuring thorough and accurate accounting of retirement benefits. Jobs at this level are typically accountable for supervising a team of professionals and technicians providing benefits advice to individuals and agencies. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these positions to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 6-7 years of experience.

Retirement Supervisor

Supervisory/managerial position accountable for the oversight and management of retirement benefits analysis programs. Jobs at this level are responsible for establishing objectives, standards, and control measures within their program. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these positions to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree, 8+ years of experience, and 1-2 years of supervisory experience.
