Bridge Inspector I

First-level position accountable for assisting in the inspection of bridges on the State maintained system. Jobs at this level assist in the planning and inspection of bridges to include assigning condition ratings, completing necessary forms, and making detailed sketches, photographs, and measurements in order to accurately report the condition of a bridge.

Typically requires completion of an FHWA approved comprehensive Bridge Inspection Course within 6 months of employment and 0-2 years of experience.

Bridge Inspector II

Second-level position accountable for the inspection of bridges on the State maintained system. Jobs at this level coordinate and perform all phases of assigned NBIS bridge inspections, make detailed sketches, photographs, and measurements in order to accurately report the condition of a bridge, and complete and submit all applicable bridge inspection forms. May serve as team leader.

Typically requires completion of an FHWA approved comprehensive Bridge Inspection Course and 2-4 years of experience.

Bridge Inspector III

Seasoned position accountable for the inspection of bridges on the State maintained system. Jobs at this level coordinate and perform all phases of assigned NBIS bridge inspections, make detailed sketches, photographs, and measurements in order to accurately report the condition of a bridge, and complete and submit all applicable bridge inspection forms. Employees at this level may function as lead workers and direct the work of lower-level employees. Serving as a team leader, may coordinate and perform all phases of assigned NBIS bridge inspections, coordinate traffic control and equipment needs, make detailed sketches, photographs, and measurements in order to accurately report the condition of a bridge, and complete and submit all applicable bridge inspection forms.

Typically requires completion of an FHWA approved comprehensive Bridge Inspection Course and 3-5 years of experience.

Bridge Inspection Team Lead

Supervisory-level position accountable for overseeing the inspection of bridges on the State maintained system. Jobs at this level coordinate and perform all phases of assigned NBIS bridge inspections, coordinate traffic control and equipment needs, make detailed sketches, photographs, and measurements in order to accurately report the condition of a bridge, and complete and submit all applicable bridge inspection forms. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. Work may also involve load capacity analysis, permitting vehicles for weight, and reporting data to the federal government.

Typically requires completion of an FHWA approved comprehensive Bridge Inspection Course and 6+ years of experience. May require Bridge Inspection Engineer.
