Chemist I
First-level professional position that performs work involving conducting chemical analyses in a chemical or public health laboratory. Duties include monitoring organic and inorganic chemical analysis of a variety of substances and materials utilizing wet chemistry and sophisticated scientific instrumentation, and reporting results. The analyses are based on standardized laboratory procedures that require exacting techniques to secure accurate and complete data. At this level, employees design basic experiments and surveys; perform simple statistical analyses for initial interpretation; prepare and review routine summaries and technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance; identify potential problem areas and issues, and contribute to developing solutions.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-2 year of experience.

Chemist II
Second-level professional position that performs advanced work in chemical analyses of a variety of substances and materials in a chemical or public health laboratory. Duties include monitoring organic and inorganic chemical analysis of a variety of substances and materials utilizing wet chemistry and sophisticated scientific instrumentation, and reporting results. Incumbents independently perform analyses and may direct the work of lower-level employees in a laboratory or in a division of a large laboratory. Positions at this level are required to interpret the principles, theories, and concepts of a scientific specialty and regulatory requirements. At this level, employees design experiments and surveys, perform complex statistical analyses, prepare and review technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance, identify potential problem areas or issues, and contribute to developing solutions. May mentor and train lower level chemists.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience.

Chemist Team Lead
Supervisory position accountable for administering the technical and scientific operations of a chemical laboratory. Duties include monitoring organic and inorganic chemical analysis of a variety of substances and materials utilizing wet chemistry and sophisticated scientific instrumentation, and reporting results. The incumbent acts as the Quality Assurance Officer for the laboratory. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 4-6 years of experience.
