Dam and Spillway Control Operator I

First-level professional position that is accountable for regulating the amount of water flowing through floodgate outlets in a dam, to maintain an even level of water in the lake or reservoir. Jobs at this level make periodic instrument tests to ascertain the change in water level, and rate of flow through spillway, and record findings on appropriate record forms. Work at this level includes interpreting data in comparison with former readings and observations and either increasing or decreasing dam apertures to maintain a prescribed rate of flow. It also includes responsibility for the maintenance of control tower and gate-lift equipment. Incumbents generally act as Communications Officers and operate radios and telephones connected with the control tower.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience.

Dam and Spillway Control Operator II

Second-level professional position that is accountable for regulating the amount of water flowing through floodgate outlets in a dam, to maintain an even level of water in the lake or reservoir. Incumbents in this classification make periodic instrument tests to ascertain the change in water level, and rate of flow through spillway, and record findings on appropriate record forms. Work at this level includes interpreting data in comparison with former readings and observations and either increasing or decreasing dam apertures to maintain a prescribed rate of flow; monitoring Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) control system alarm events; and notifying appropriate personnel if an alarm event has occurred. It also includes responsibility for the maintenance of control tower and gate-lift equipment. Incumbents generally act as Communications Officers and operate radios and telephones connected with the control tower.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 3+ years of experience.

Dam and Spillway Control Team Lead

Supervisory position accountable for overseeing spillway operations and regulations of the amount of water flowing through floodgate outlets in a dam, to maintain an even level of water in the lake or reservoir. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. Incumbents generally act as Communications Officers and operate radios and telephones connected with the control tower.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 4-6 years of experience.
