Forest Ranger I
First-level Ranger position accountable serving as a member of a forest fire suppression crew in an assigned area of the state. The work involves working as a member of a crew in preventing and suppressing forest fires, assisting in maintenance of firefighting equipment, construction and maintenance of fire breaks, assisting in timber marking, loading and unloading firefighting equipment, using hand tools in suppressing fires, and maintaining work centers.
Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency. Employees must obtain their Commercial Drivers License and pass a fitness exam within 90 days of employment.

Forest Ranger II
Second-level Ranger position accountable for serving on a forest fire suppression crew in an assigned area of the state. The work involves preventing and suppressing forest fires, maintenance of firefighting equipment, construction and maintenance of fire breaks, assisting in timber marking, loading and unloading firefighting equipment, using hand tools in suppressing fires, and maintaining work centers. Serves as a lead worker over Ranger staff and as primary field training officer for new rangers.
Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 1-3 years of experience.

Forestry Technician I
First-level vocational Forestry position accountable for protecting, reforesting, and inventorying timber lands in accordance with Mississippi Forestry Commission regulations on private and public lands. Jobs at this level collaborate with federal agencies on forest land designations and critical area layouts and contact land owners giving advice on proper forestry management practices such as tree planting, timber stand improvement, and establishment of fire lanes. May be responsible for assisting a forest fire suppression crew.
Typically requires as Associate’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience.

Forestry Technician II
Second-level vocational Forestry position accountable for coordinating the activities of lower-level positions in the prevention and suppression of forest fires. Jobs at this level are responsible for directing fire prevention and control activities, construction and maintenance work, informational and educational program activities, and forest management practices in an assigned area of the state.
Typically requires an Associate’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience.

Forester I
First-level professional Forestry position accountable for preparing county fire plans and training county crews in fire suppression, timber management, and safety work. Jobs at this level prepare detailed forest management plans for landowners; mark timber; assist in locating timber markets; and supervise prescribed burning activities. Jobs at this level also plan and administer safety programs, inspect and direct maintenance of fire-fighting equipment, and perform fire detection and suppression activities.
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience and licensure as a Registered Forester.

Forester II

Forestry Team Lead
First-level Supervisory Forestry position accountable for directing a phase of a statewide forestry program. The duties are often technical in nature, not only requiring the application of techniques that are well standardized, but in addition, demanding continuous study and experimentation to develop new techniques. Employees at this level direct and review the work of lower-level positions.
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of experience and licensure as a Registered Forester.

Forestry Supervisor
Second-level Supervisory Forestry position accountable for directing a specific region of the statewide forestry program. Work at this level includes administrative, personnel, and budget management of a state forestry program in accordance with policies, rules, and regulations. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 6+ years of experience and licensure as a Registered Forester.
