Geologist-in-Training
First-level professional position that performs work involving field, laboratory, and library research in various phases and sub- disciplines of Geology and geotechnical investigations, and issues related to geological characterization and environmental concerns, rules, and regulations. Incumbents perform various technical functions, e.g. mapping; data collection including geologic, geotechnical, geochemical, and other sample taking; assisting and preparing technical and public information reports.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree, registration with the Mississippi Board of Registered Professional Geologists as a Geologist in Training or passage of the Fundamentals of Geology exam with confirmation from the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologists and pending registration.

Geologist I
Second-level professional position that performs work involving field, laboratory, and library research in various phases and subdisciplines of Geology and geotechnical investigations, and issues related to geological characterization and environmental concerns, rules, and regulations. Incumbents perform various technical functions, e.g. mapping; data collection including geologic, geotechnical, geochemical, and other sample taking; assisting and preparing technical and public information reports. May mentor Geologists in Training.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree, registration as a Registered Professional Geologist (RPG) by the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologists, and 3-5 years of experience.

Geologist II
Seasoned professional position that performs professional, administrative, and technical work in coordinating and directing field, laboratory, and library research in various phases and sub-disciplines of Geology and geotechnical investigations, and issues related to geological characterization and environmental concerns, rules, and regulations. Research and other projects include highly complex investigations which may cover large areas in which a variety of geologic/geotechnical conditions may be encountered and may also include participation in conferences and hearings to present expert and technical recommendations based on geological, geohydrologic, and/or geotechnical conditions. May mentor Geologists in Training.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree, registration as a Registered Professional Geologist (RPG) by the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologists, and 6+ years of experience.

Geologist Team Lead
Supervisory-level position accountable for administrative and technical work through the leadership of a team of individual contributors. This is typically the first level of supervision, in which the focus is on supervision, resource management and the accountability for leadership of staff. Accountable for the results of the team’s work outcomes and integrations, where relevant, with other teams. Plans and directs the work of the allocated resources of the team. Ensures the work of the team is performed in accordance with overall management objectives. Reviews and reports on work progress and outcomes. Acts as a technical resource to the team in geology. Acts as project manager when designated for that role.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree, registration as a Registered Professional Geologist (RPG) by the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologist, and 7+ years of experience.

Geologist Supervisor
Supervisory position accountable for administrative, professional and technical environmental geologist work involving the implementation of federal, regional and statewide programs for the geological characterization, regulation, or management of land and water use, drinking water, air and water pollution, or other environmental activities. Employees in this occupational class are usually responsible for administering the activities of a major, technical geological division. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. May mentor Geologists in Training.

Geologist Manager
This position serves as the State Geologist with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. As such, the State Geologist is a member of the Association of American State Geologists that cooperate nationally in obtaining funding and setting priorities for critical programs. Positions at this level are accountable for planning, organizing, budgeting, allocating resources for moderate to complex projects and reviewing assigned geological resources functions and staff. The primary focus of positions at this level is on the management of other managerial and/or supervisory staff. Incumbents at this level have managerial and technical accountability for the overall results of the assigned organizational units. Accountable for developing plans for the assigned organizational units and for delegating the achievements of objectives to the relevant teams. Identifies, allocates, reorganizes and provides necessary resources to achieve organizational objectives. Manages and engages in effective people management activities such as recruitment, training, development, and performance managements.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Geological discipline, registration as a Registered Professional Geologist (RPG) by the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologists, and 10+ years of experience.
