Vocational-level position accountable for working within the framework of established system administration and operating systems policies and procedures. Performs technical writing at the lower end of scope and complexity. Participates in requirements gathering. Participates in Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) program configuration. Creates lower level systems documentation. Undertakes work at the lower level of risk and complexity. Racks and stacks servers and storage. Participates in the installation of servers. Does patch installation on server operating systems and agency specific applications. Conducts back up runs and recoveries.
Typically requires High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 3-4 years of IT technical experience, often in the IT End User service management support function or a Bachelor’s Degree and 0 years of relevant experience.

Systems Administration Specialist I
Applies and uses experience in the field of systems administration and multi-platform hardware and software operating systems to provide a full range of system administration functions within the assigned organizational area and IT function. Configures, tests, installs, and monitors performance of typically mid-range servers. Updates and maintains documentation on the assigned servers. Liaises with vendors on licenses and updates. Performs backups and recoveries as required on assigned servers. Makes recommendations for changes and may implement agreed enhancements. May function as team lead and direct the work of first- level positions. Acts with independence and may be accountable for significant portion of a large project or enhancement.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4+ years of IT experience with emphasis in system administration.

Systems Administration Specialist II
Second-level professional position accountable for performing complex assignments often requiring the development of new or improved multi-platform hardware and software operating systems and system administration processes or techniques. Accountable for the design, implementation and evaluation of system administration and operating systems. Makes recommendations for process improvement in relevant disciplines. Participates in the development of system administration and operating system standards. Works on and solves complex problems where analysis requires in depth evaluation of various factors. Provides complex technical support in relevant field of discipline. May serve as project lead and provide technical direction to lower level team members. Mentors less experienced staff.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 5-8+ years of IT experience with emphasis in multi-platform hardware and software systems administration.

Third-level professional position accountable for the development, enhancement and maintenance of multi-platform hardware and software operating systems of moderate complexity and risk or impact for assigned organizational areas. May be accountable for multiple multi-platform hardware and software operating systems and system administration teams. Manages vendor relations for less complex applications.
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 7-10+ years of IT experience with emphasis in multi-platform hardware and software systems and systems administration.

Supervisory-level position accountable for the development, enhancement and maintenance of multi-platform hardware and software operating systems at the high end of complexity and high risk or impact for assigned organizational areas. Manages multiple systems administration teams. Accountable for portfolio management of multi-platform hardware and software operating systems. Supervises team leaders and lower level System Administration Managers. Interacts with stakeholders and high level business users. Manages vendor relations.
