Jobs in this family design or coordinate the development of integrated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial or non-spatial databases, maintain or modify existing GIS databases, create graphic presentations of GIS data using GIS hardware or software applications, and perform geospatial data building, modeling, or analysis using advanced spatial analysis, data manipulation, or cartography software.

GIS Specialist I

First-level position responsible for capturing, storing, manipulating, documenting, distributing, and displaying geographically referenced information from a variety of sources. Uses utility and data conversion software and manipulates and analyzes data which may include quality assurance, creation, and maintenance of spatial data topology. Compiles, edits, and maintains data in geographic and operational databases. Responds to technical questions from end users and resolves basic problems.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree or four years of experience in GIS.

GIS Specialist II

Second-level professional responsible for developing spatial data overlays and comparisons, performing geostatistical analysis, and geocoding, generating, and analyzing grids, surfaces, routes, and networks. Reviews procedures and applications to ensure data integrity, compatibility with existing systems and compliance with standards, policies and other guidelines. Provides technical support and training to end users, responds to complex questions, and resolves user problems.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 1-3 years of experience in GIS.

GIS Specialist Team Lead

Supervisory position accountable for providing consultative guidance and technical expertise in geodatabase analysis and design, geographic information application programming, spatial data and technology integration, remote sensing applications, network and route analysis, and web mapping applications. Provides GIS project management and supervision. Develops and analyzes complex specifications such as flowcharts, logic, and work flow diagrams. Supervises GIS professionals.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of experience in GIS.

GIS Specialist Supervisor

Supervisory/Managerial position accountable for directing and coordinating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects that are complex in nature within an agency or between multiple agencies. Integrates GIS technology throughout agencies and existing systems and improves services and operation through the use of spatial data. Creates, adopts, and modifies GIS standards and procedures. Responsible for project planning, overseeing activities of the project team, identifying appropriate resources needed and developing project plans, timelines and accountabilities. Must be familiar with project scope and objectives as well as role of each team member. Manages the work of GIS professionals.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 5-7 years of experience in GIS and two years of supervisory experience.
